Homemade Bird Feeders

Homemade Bird Feeders

Building a bird feeder can be a great project for moms, dads and kids. It's fairly simple to build a bird feeder that can be hung in the back yard and bring years of enjoyment for the whole family. You can either start from scratch with material you have around the house, or you can purchase a kit that has everything you need to make a very attractive and functional feeder.

You can make a very simple bird feeder out on an egg carton by cutting off the lid and filling the egg pockets with birdseed. To hang the carton, simply poke holes in the four corners of the carton and run string through each hole. Then, gather the string together and tie a knot. You can hang the feeder from any tree branch.

Soda bottles also make great bird feeders. Wash a two-liter soda bottle and make two holes at the bottom of the bottle. Thread a piece of wire through the holes and twist the wire ends together. Place dowels near the bottom of the feeder, and make an opening for birds to remove seed or cereal.

Kids also love to make cardboard tube bird feeders. All you need is a tube from a paper towel roll and a piece of yarn. Tread the yarn through the tube, then lay the tube on a piece of paper towel or plastic and coat it with honey. Take birdseed or cereal and sprinkle it all over the sticky tube. Tie the yarn into a knot and hang your completed project from any tree branch in your back yard.

If you want to get a little fancier, a bird feeder kit has prefabricated pieces with easy to follow instructions. They come in a variety of designs including a simple platform feeder to beautifully designed miniature versions of Victorian or colonial style homes. You can find bird feeder kits in any craft and hobby shop, gift shops and a number of online stores.

Homemade Biscuit Recipe

Homemade Biscuit Recipe

The following recipe is what is called making biscuit's from scratch - My Grandmother made them like this, but mother was lazy and opted for the canned variety - that we all know taste, well not that great.

Making biscuits from scratch is not hard at all - it takes us about 20 minutes from beginning to out of the oven and ready to eat. They taste so much better and you can have quality time with the kids making them - Why? Because there is a cookie cutter involved and it's like working with Play-Doh!

Ingredients:

2 ¼ cups of all-purpose flour (never really tried anything else)

3 teaspoons of baking powder

½-teaspoon salt

½ cup of shortening (Crisco)

1-cup milk (we use buttermilk)

Cooking Directions:

Preheat Oven to 450 F. degrees

In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Using blender, cut shortening into flour until consistency of course meal. Pour in milk; stir with fork until mixture leaves sides of bowl and forms a soft moist dough, toss lightly until no longer stocky, Roll out to ½ inch thick, and cut with 2-inch floured cookie cutter. Place on un-greased cookie sheet. Bake biscuits in oven on middle or top rack at 450 degrees for 8-12 minutes or until lightly golden. Serve hot with butter and favorite jams and jelly or honey. Makes about 12-15 biscuits.

For snacks throughout the morning leave the left over biscuits plated on the top of the stove, and they can ad peanut butter, or their favorite spreads for a mid morning treat.

Homemade Energy Bar Recipe

Homemade Energy Bar Recipe

Energy bars take up almost as much space on the isles of grocery stores and gas stations as candy bars. They provide a quick fix of calories for people on the go, or the athlete who needs extra fuel. The bars are typically high in protein, though many contain high amounts of corn syrup and sugars as well. Energy Bars come with names like "Splendor Berry," "Cocoa Supreme," and "Peanut Surprise." But these products contain more "surprise" and less natural ingredients like peanuts, cocoa, or berries. In fact, the modern energy bar is such a potent lab development of artificial sweeteners and designer whey that the actual product barely resembles or tastes like anything that could come out of the ground...

Which is why you should make your own energy bars. Natural, organic, high protein energy bars. And this is a recipe for one of the best.

Ingredients
0.25 cup sesame seed meal 0.25 cup almond butter 0.25 cup coconut oil (can be found at health food store or higher quality grocery stores) 0.5 cup almonds (chopped or slivered) 0.5 cup pecans 0.5 cup dried blueberries 0.25 shredded coconut (unsweetened) 0.5 teaspoon natural honey 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 0.25 teaspoon salt
Instructions

Toast nuts and shredded coconut on a baking sheet. During baking, give the sheet a good shake occasionally to flip shreds for a more even toast. Blend the mixture in a food processor until ingredients are thoroughly chopped and pulpy.

Microwave the almond butter and coconut oil together for about 30 seconds. Stir until the mixture becomes gooey and smooth. Mix the honey, salt, and pure vanilla extract into the almond butter/coconut oil. Fold the sesame seed meal and nut mixture into the "goo" and mix vigorously. Add the blueberries, and keep mixing vigorously.

Flatten the mixture into a 4 x 8 bread or loaf pan. Refrigerate for thirty minutes. The mixture should be thick, but not brittle. Cut into 6 bars, or for kicks, slice up into "cookie cutter" shapes like stars and hearts for the kids.

The great thing about these energy bars is that they are naturally low in carbohydrates. Yet, they still provide that calorie kick as well as healthy nuts and fats associated with a high protein diet. It's perfect for the carb counter who's looking for a boost of energy without overloading on sugar. If this is up your alley, check out these healthy nut recipes for more high protein options.

Homemade Trout Dough Bait Recipes

Homemade Trout Dough Bait Recipes

There are obviously many types of trout bait sold in retail stores, but making homemade trout dough bait is a great way to really involve yourself in the process of catching some trout. Homemade trout bait recipes can easily be altered based on what colors, flavors, and smells are successful for trout in your area. The following are guidelines for making two different types of homemade trout bait.

The first type of homemade bait is meant to entice the trout's taste buds and sense of smell by employing cheese and garlic. First, take a quarter of a pound of Velveeta and melt it in your microwave. Then, create the dough by mixing together the melted Velveeta, 2 cups water, 1 cup flour, 1 cup cornmeal, ½ cup sugar, and 1 tablespoon garlic powder (you can always add more garlic powder to create a stronger smell). Once you have mixed these ingredients until they form a pliable dough, fill a stockpot with water and bring it to a boil. Form the dough into small balls and cook in the boiling water for 1-2 minutes as if you were cooking dumplings. After cooking, dry the dough balls out by laying them on some sheets of paper towel.

The second method of creating homemade trout dough bait is done by utilizing food coloring to attract trout visually. The use of sardines will also cater to their sense of smell. In this recipe, combine 1 cup water, ¼ cup light corn syrup, several drops of food coloring (your choice of color, just make sure it is bright) and about 2 tablespoons peanut butter in a small saucepan and allow it to heat up. Mix ½ cup flour and ½ cup cornmeal in a bowl and add this mixture to the saucepan. Continue to cook over low heat until the mixture has thickened. Remove the saucepan from the stove and add to the dough mixture ¼ cup Marshmallow Fluff and one can of sardines. You will want to puree the sardines in a blender or food processor so it is liquefied before adding it to the dough. Allow this mixture to cool, and then mix in some cotton balls, which will help give your bait some texture and shape, and then form the dough into small balls. This recipe is very smelly but the discomfort you may experience while cooking up this concoction could lead to some very big rewards the next time you are trout fishing.

Both of these trout baits can be attached to a treble hook and used with a bobber. By engaging several of the trout's sense at one time, you will find that these dough baits are some of the best rainbow trout lures you could ever use.

Homemade Catfishing Baits - How To Make The Best Bait For Catfish At Home

The best kind of bait for catfishes would be fish that they ordinarily eat in their respective habitats. For example, if your location has more shad than sunfish, load your hooks with shad. If your place has more eels in the water, load your hooks with eel chunks. It's that easy.

It's fun to make a catfish bait method at home. You should give it a try before you pack for your fishing trip. All you need is a list of smelly stuff from your wife's larder or freezer. The catfish love smelly stuff. The scent of your bait should ideally carry itself through layers of water to the catfish hiding in the holes in the bottom. Only then can you expect a decent catch.

Easy Peanut Butter

Making catfish bait is easy. Derive all the smelly stuff in the kitchen and make dough rolls out of a mix of everything. If the dough rolls aren't sticky enough, you can add any kind of flour to it. Here's a sample recipe. Grate some Limburger cheese and heat it in a saucepan to melt. Add garlic powder to the melted cheese. Add corn flour to the mix and keep it away to cool. If the composition isn't hard enough after cooling, add some more flour. Roll the dough into small balls and use the balls as bait.

Bait that works almost all the time is chicken liver. You can also find ready bait made of chicken liver on the shelves. The cats just love their chicken liver; they just can't get enough of it. Just cut up chunks of chicken liver and use them as bait. You will get a lot of attentiveness from the catfish.

Some fishermen spread blood or corn flakes in the water colse to their boat to attract the cats' attention. Also, peanut butter and corn flakes mix makes decent bait. You should also try peanut butter and jelly sandwich chunks as bait. I hear that you can get a big channel cat or two concerned with that bait. Catfish also love ivory soap. It might sound a bit odd that they prefer ivory soap to food, but they do. You can even buy ready ivory soap bait in some fishing equipment stores.

Larger cats like blue catfish, bullhead catfish, and flathead catfish prefer cut up fish for bait. You can use shrimp, crawdad, shad, minnow, or sunfish for bait. Now here's an idea: you should try dipping these baits in fish oil first to make them smelly. This will get you a lot of attentiveness from the cats.

Flathead catfish prefer live bait. You can buy goldfish from your local pet store for this purpose. Buy the goldfish and put them in your fishing bucket. You should bait them just below the dorsal fins to bait them properly. If you can't find goldfish, you can bait your lines with live sunfish or shad. You can use the smaller cats for bait as well. If you are out fishing, save up all your smaller catches to use as bait for flathead.

A Great recipe For Homemade Puppy Treats

Dog treats that you buy in your local pet shop are quite expensive, inspecting the whole you get in one package. Not only that, it could comprise preservatives and chemicals, which can be harmful to your dog. If you want to make treats for your puppy without the preservatives, follow these uncomplicated steps to make yummy treats for your furry friend.

Look at your cupboard and check if you have the following available: quick-cooking oats (not instant oats), baking soda, peanut butter, parsley. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F and line your pan with a non-stick baking sheet. Check the ingredients of the peanut butter. You would want something that has the least whole of chemicals. There is even organic peanut butter that has no chemicals at all. In a bowl, concentrate 1 ½ cups of quick-cooking oats and 1 teaspoon of baking soda. Mix together. Chop up some parsley amounting to about two to three tablespoons. Mix it with the oat mixture. Add about ¾ cup of peanut butter and mix thoroughly. You would want to come up with a combination that is not too sticky. If it is, add some more quick-cooking oats. Shape the combination into small circles about the size of your middle finger's nail. Place on the pan, about a centimeter apart. Bake for about 8 to 10 minutes. When it is done, place in a cooling rack and exchange to a cookie jar after about 30 minutes. This method would yield about sixty or more cookies, depending on the size. My two dogs can't get sufficient of them so I had to bake them every week. Try this one out and your puppy will categorically follow you around the house begging for more.

Easy Homemade Chocolate Truffles - Melt Someone's Heart Today

Giving the gift of food dates back through the ages. People love to receive something luscious that they simply can't wait to sink their teeth into. One of the best gifts the women in my family like to receive is the gift of chocolate. Chocolate Truffles, to be exact.

I always think of my sister any time I see chocolate truffles on display. I have given these as a gift to her many times and she's always thrilled when she opens the package. I, however, wanted to try my hand at making a batch of easy homemade chocolate truffles and get her opinion, since she's the number one chocoholic that I know. I took them to her for a taste test and needless to say, I didn't get to bring any home with me!

Easy Peanut

This recipe is so quick and easy you don't need a special occasion to enjoy them.

Easy Homemade Chocolate Truffles

3/4 cup butter
3/4 cup cocoa powder
1 (14oz) can sweetened condensed milk
1 Tablespoonful vanilla or almond extract
Cocoa powder (optional)
Chocolate sprinkles (optional)

In a heavy saucepan on low heat, melt butter. Add cocoa powder and stir until blended. Mix in sweetened condensed milk. Stir until thick and shiny - around 4 minutes or so.

Remove from heat and stir in the extract. Chill around 3-4 hours. When cool shape into balls. You may roll the balls into either the cocoa powder or chocolate sprinkles for an extra chocolate kick.

Chill 1-2 hours and keep refrigerated until ready to enjoy!

I still buy her a pretty box full of store-bought fancy truffles on occasion, but she's just as excited to get a batch of these. Truffles can be quite expensive in a chocolate shop. A batch of these can be made for half, if not less then half the price of a pound of store-bought truffles, depending on where you shop.
